Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines is located in Golden, CO (population 17,000) with 5000 students and a 92% retention rate. It is known for it’s elite STEM programs. It offers 30 different undergrad degrees and 52 minors, and named the 4th brainiest college in the US.
Each class is comprised of 1400-1500 undergrads, with 31% female and 69%. 20% in Greek life. Relaxed vibe.
Mines now has a R1 Research Status. It is known for its hands-on experiential learning experiences and creative teamwork. First year students work on a Cornerstone Project, working in teams to design something original. Seniors complete a Capstone experience. Every major participates in a field session. It’s most popular major is Mechanical Engineering, followed by Computer Science, Civil, EE, Quantitative Biology, Math, and Data Science. Students do not have to declare a major until the 2nd year. Mines has a strong testing center for tutoring, academic advising, counseling, and other safety nets. 800 of the 5000 students utilize the disability office. 35% of students apply undeclared- no downside. Students apply to the institution as a whole. They offer several Lots of 4+1 programs (Bachelor + Masters). Mines is test-optional and plans to continue the policy into the future.
60% of applicants did submit scores. 80% incoming freshmen have Calculus or better and an Average Weighted GPA of 3.8-4.0, and SAT scores 1350-1490.
Fun traditions include E days in late April where students build boats out of cardboard and duct tape and race down the river. Mines boasts a 92% retention rate and named the safest college campus in CO. 55% of the student body is from CO. Campus is only 12 minutes from Red Rocks, a popular spot to catch concerts. Its Division 2 Athletics program has 18 varsity teams. There are 25+ hiking trails in and around Golden, along with 12 Skiing resorts within 1.5 hours of campus.
Demonstrated interest is VERY IMPORTANT. Interested students must visit in person or virtually.
Preferred high school curriculum for consideration-Calculus, Chem and Physics. They do not consider AP scores (just your grade in the class). Test scores not required for merit scholarship consideration. 1300+ companies actively recruit Mines students.
